Lake Albano Kayak Tour Near Rome
Explore the fascinating and beautiful Lake Albano by kayak on this wonderful tour. We begin with a ground lesson on paddling technique led by our guides, who are also kayak instructors.
Once on the water, you are immersed in the deep peace of the lake. Lake Albano is a unique expression of flora and fauna just a few minutes from Rome. The guide tells you the history of the lake of Castel Gandolfo and shows you some unique historical spots, such as the submerged stilt houses of the Village of the Mills and the ports of the Roman villas.
Interesting sites include the villa of the Emperor Domitian, the areas where the Romans loved watching the atrocious spectacle of naval battles (naumachia), the houses of local hermits, and the trampoline of the popes, where the old popes loved to dive down from their summer residence located in the village above the lake.
During the hottest months, from March to late October, we dock at a beach that can only be reached by kayak for a relaxing break and a refreshing swim in the pristine waters of the lake.
Throughout the tour, the instructors give you continuous lessons on paddling technique. By the end of the tour, you feel like an expert!

The first human settlement on the shores of Lake Albano is a pile-dwelling village discovered in 1984 with the recent lowering of the waters on the north shore of the lake. Known as ‘Villaggio delle Macine,’ due to some stone millstones found there, its dating fluctuates from the XX-XIX centuries BC up to the middle Bronze Age (XVII-XVI century BC). Around 395 BC, at the time of the fights of Rome against Veii, an exhaust tunnel was built through the walls of the crater, which served as an outlet if the level of the lake had passed the entrance. It was a work of hydraulic engineering particularly interesting for the times.
During and after the era of the ancient Romans, naumachie (naval battles) took place on the lake, so the bottom of the lake is full of interesting finds.
